Lyon House is one of Stoneham's best preserved examples of a traditional form, five bay, center entry Greek Revival cottage. The house, which includes a rear ell, is sheathed in clapboards and rests on a granite foundation.
It faces east onto Warren Street on a slight rise in a crowded residential setting. Like many later nineteenth century houses in Stoneham, it is approached by granite steps and fronted by granite curbing and posts. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community) The T.U. Lyons House possesses' integrity of location, design, setting, materials and is signifi- cant as one of Stoneham's best detailed and preserved Greek Revival cottages. It not only provides an intact illustration of the form and detail of this locally important housing type, but also retains such features as granite.curbing and posts.- It meets criterion C of the National Register of Historic Places. This residence was built in the mid-nineteenth century, in the early years of Stoneham's shoe manutacturing boom by T. U.
Lyon, a shoe cutter. As such, it provides a good illustration of the living quarters of the mainstay of Stoneham's population. It was built on Warren Street which had been a north-south route through Stoneham prior to construction of the Medford-Andover Turnpike in 1806. This area, just behind the turpike, became heavily developed during the nineteenth century with modest residences. A few earlier houses stood along the road until recently.
