Three bays wide, with its gable end turned to the street to resemble the classical temple form, the theme is carried out with paneled corner pilasters supporting a wide frieze at the sides. The door surround, similar to many found in American-produced pattern books, has long sidelights, paneled pilasters, and a full entablature. Long first-floor windows and second-story windows are cupped by shallow pedimented lintels.
HISIURICAL SIGNIFICANCE (explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community) Charles Manning, who gave his name to the street which definesthis lot, lived here from 1854-89. He was a manufacturer of parlor desks, the extensive woodworking industry that flourished from the 1830, part of the Civil War years on the east side of the town. Many of the companies specialized in parlor desks, which were first made by Dinsmore & Grouard down the street. Manning was apprenticed to Francis Kingman, who lived across Salem Street. He purchased the last three months of his three-year term in order to train at a Baptist Theological Academy in New York, but never became a minister. He went into partnership with his brother Ezra Manning and Solon A. Parker; the three men were manufacturing on Pearl Street.
