Constructed c. 1700, it has an asymmetrical, four bay facade with its entry. in the inner southerly bay. It rises two stories to a pitched roof with an added rear lean-to. The roof, now covered in asphalt, is pierced by an off-center chimney with rear flue.
The house is sheathed in clap- boards with a boxed cornice, simple corner boards and slightly projecting window architraves. Windows appear to retain their original size and placement throughout the house and contain original 9/6 sash at the first story, 2/2 in the attic gables, and mid-late nineteenth century 2/2 sash at the second story. The entry, with, its unornamented architrave and vertically sheathed door, is the result of a recent restoration which replaced a mid-late nineteenth century treatment with bracketed hood. The house faces southeast on Green Street in a twentieth century HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (explain the role owners played in local or state history residentia and how the building relates to the development of the community) area.
The Mil1ard-Souther-Green House possesses integrity of Tocation, design, materials and workman- ship; it is significant as one of Stoneham's best preserved early houses:. It meets criterion C of the National Register of Historic Places. One of a handful of surviving early eighteenth century houses in Stoneham, this residence was built by Thomas Millard of Reading. It was sold to the Souther family in 1725, and later to members of the Green family. The Millard-Souther-Green House is mentioned by all the early historians of the town: Dean, Stevens, and Buckman, as an early landmark.
