acreage 1.309 acres Setting_High on embankment, faces south 19/325790/4712180 (Staple additional sheets here) 3 ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE (describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within community) This is a good example of houses built before the mid-18th century -- oftencalled "First Period,", as they still reflected late medieval, organic, rather than symmetrical, building considerations. It may originally have been bays wide, a half-house, which was later expanded by 2 bays and later a third bay to the east. The small windows, with 6/6 lights, touch the plate on the second story. The door surround is plain; the central chimney is large, and probably organized the interior spaces of the house. The rubble- stone foundation is found in houses of this period..
HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community) Richard Nichols and his descendants have been a part of Reading history from the first grant of land to John Nichols in 1686/7 until the present. The house was owned and the property farmed by this family until 1893. The two Nichols farmsteads in the Franklin Street area covered over one hundred and forty-three acres, much of which remain thinly settled today, due to the long family ownership and to the Meadow Brook Golf Club, whose links have prevented subdivision.
