Ite Setting_Oriented toward the south on a small hillock, the house is close to the road and shaded by evergreens UTM: 19/32572014708810 (Staple additional sheets here) ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE (describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within community) The Samue1 Parker house is representative of Reading's late 18th-century modest residences. The small gambrel-roofed section is the oldest portion of the house. Originally it had a central chimney, whose foundations remain in the cellar, but which was removed later. This one and one-half story, five bay house oriented toward the south on a granite foundation represents the simpler version of Reading's 18th- century house construction. Window enframements and door surrounds are of the simplest form: narrow strips of wood framing the openings.
HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community) The house served a succession of owners engaged in a line of trades and smal1 businesses. As late as 1943, this house is a reminder of the sizeable group of Reading citizens who were working-class tradesmen or craftsmeh. Samuel Parker was a cooper living in the house until 1849. occupants were Harriet and Merrill Hutchinson, who conducted a prosper- carriage-painting business through the 1890's, and during a brief period in the 1880's experimented in market gardening. E. Idella Kenney built up a nursery business after purchasing the property in 1896, re- maining there until 1943. For a number of years she shared the house with her sister, Carrie Belle Kenney, one of the first women to graduate from M.I.T. * Samuel Brooks was also a cooper.
