Setting_Faces south, close to road UTM: 19/32702014708440 (Staple additional sheets here) ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE (describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within community) This house. like its neighbor at 472 Summer Avenue, displays a Greek Revival variation of a Georgian-Federal vernacular building form -- seen in only three houses in Reading (though the house on County Road and West Street is gable-ended). Probably built in the early 1850's, the high peaked roof extends to form a covered veranda; a heavy cornice is supported by fluted Doric columns. Paneled pilasters edge the flushboarded facade. A pleas- ling Greek Revival feature are the tridle-hung, 6/6/6 windows with fluted architrave surrounds and corner blocks. The same treatment is given to the sidelighted central door.
The fanciful dormer was added in the Queen HASPORIEAY SIGNIFICANCE (explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community) Stillman E. Parker was a member of the Bethesda Congregation Church, as were members of his extended family who lived nearby in the Hill End district. He was a well-to-do manufacturer of shoes for thirty-five years, and a public-spirited man, serving on the boards of selectmen, assessor and overseers of the poor, and for twenty-two years on the School Committee. District 1 School stood nearby, across from his house. He had been educated beyond the borders of the town. This house and its nearby neighbor were built by brothers-in-law; Parker's second wife was a Pratt, sister to the owner of 472 Summer Avenuc. BIBLIOGRAPHY and/or REFERENCES 1854 map S. E.
