The South School, built 1857-58, is Stoneham's best preserved mid 19th century schoolhouse. The school, which rises two stories from a granite foundation to a broad gable roof, features a simple rectangular plan, five-bay facade and central entry. As originally built, the South School contained four classrooms, two on each floor. The School retains its original form unaltered as well as the bracketed cornice, overhanging eaves and gable returns of its original Italianate appearance.
Subsequent alterations to the building include introduction of a pair of large central chimneys (probably as part of a change in the heating system, ca. 1890), replacement of the original entry porch with a Colonial Revival porch (ca. 1910),-residing of the original clapboards and flushboarding with shingles (ca.1960) and addition: of shutters to all sash (ca. 1960): The building appears to have been used as a school well into the 20th century; it probably came into residential use ca. 1960. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community) The South School is significant as the best preserved mid-19th century school in Stoneham.
The South School is also important as a manifestation of the municipal response to Stoneham's rapid economic growth at mid-century: three new four-room schools (one of them the South School) and an Almshouse (#113) were constructed in the 1850s to serve a population which had doubled between 1840 and 1850. Architecturally, the South Schoolis significant as one of the earliest surviving examples of two-story, multi-room school construction in the Boston area: prior to 1850, most schools constructed were one-story structures with one or two rooms. The South School meets criteria A and C of the National Register of Historic Places.
