Constructed ca. 1880-1885, it 15 a large two story structure, six bays long and two bays deep, with paired entries centered on the facade.It 1s sheathed in clapboards and enclosed by a pitched roof with paired interior chimneys. windows have simple surrounds and contain 2/2 sash. The entries are headed by transoms and a continuous bracketed hood.
HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community) The John Steele House possesses integrity of location, design, setting, materials, and workmanship. It is significant as one of only two well preserved double workers', houses in Stoneham. As a representative housing type from Stoneham's major Deriod of significance , it meets criterion A. of the National Register of Historic Places. This site was an orchard in 1874; by 1889 the map shows this row of workers' double houses, adjacent to the E.L. Patch Company and a number of factories. Such houses were often owned by a company for workers, or by a separate landlord.
