The Stoneham Firestation is a major focal point of the town center and the town's outstanding example of Renaissance Revival public architecture. Constructed ca. 1916, the firestation is a two-story, L-plan flat roofed structure with a four-story hip roofed hose drying tower set into the angle of the L.
The building is built of red brick with con- trasting cast stone trim including keystones, window sills, door hoods supported on console brackets, and denticulated cornices on both the main block of the building and its tower. The tower is the major focus of the design: Tuscany in feeling and detail, it features a three-story enclosed base surmounted by a richly ornamented bracketted cornice and an open archeisfoRTCA. The Stoneham Firestation possesses integrity of location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling, and association. It is significant as a locally important Renaissance Revival design and as the town's finest firestation. It meets criterion C of the National Register of Historic Places.
The Stoneham Firestation embodies the distinctive characteristics of turn-of-the-century firestation design. There are three major components of the design, each serving a separate function: within the L plan, one end of the L contains the garage while the opposite end contains offices and residential space. Within the highly visible tower, the fire hose could be hung to dry. Firestation designs with these three components were common in Massachusetts from the 1880s through the early 20th century.
