Boston North Quad 1:25,000 UTM: 19 327680 4705770 (Stanle additional sheets here) ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE (describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within conmunity) The Jesse Tay House is one of Stoneham's best preserved Federal period houses, although of less standard appearance than the Caleb Wiley House (#65). Constructed c. 1810, it is an asymmetrical four bay house with a center entry which rises two stories to a pitched roof. It is one room deepwith asymmetrically placed rear wall chimneys.
It rests on a granite foundation and is sheathed in clapboards with narrow cornerboards and flat window architraves, producing the taut surface associated with the Federal period. A two story rear ell extends from the east end and a one story ell projects sideways from the east elevation: Sash. is a 2/2 nineteenth century replacement and the entry is protected by an open pitched roof portico. The house is set on a hill and faces north onto Elm Street. An 1885 photograph (S.H.S.) shows the house with its current window and chimney placement but with 6/6 sash and a slightly recessed entry with simple architrave frame. The house meets criteria A and I.C of the National. Register of Historic Places. Jesse Tay was a shoebench maker and farmer. Members of his family residing at this address were shoemakers. Tay's house, which is recorded in 1830 and 1858 maps, is one of the earliest along Elm Street, a route to Wakefield and the west. It is likely that at least one of the ells extending from this house was used as a shoe shop during Stoneham's early industrial period.
