The main door has shouldered- architrave trim, while the porch and pilasters are composed of Italianate/ Eastlake elements. The decorative slate roof, three-story side bays, and side porches make for a picturesque arrangement.
HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community) Chute Street, whose name commemorates Daniel Chute, owner of these farmlands, was laid out in 1848. It was the third development in town, and occurred, not coincidentally, after the railroad made both commuting and the quick delivery of manufactured products a reality. Joseph S. Temple_attended, after,Reading elementary education, schools at Worcester, Lawrence, Groton, and Andover. After three years in the hide and leather trade, he went into business in 1866 with members of the Damon family. The firm made men's neckties, and was located until 1869 in the Bank Building at 643 Main Street.
In 1910 he shifted to another branch of the business, a branch responsible for the manufacturing of 250,000 ties a year, and moved to the YMCA build- ing once at 575 Main Street, which was formerly_a part of the old Perkins mansion. He married Lucia Kingman in 1870. She died in 1880. marrier Miry Elizabeth Shepard who later, with her step-aaughters, donated Memorial Park, elong with other Reading women.
