The Greek Revival portico consists of fluted Doric columns and a pediment. with an entablature containing metopes. It was .probably added when the house was remodeled about 1856.
The Greek Revival style had by that date re- (con't.) HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community) This was one of the Temple family homesteads, whose land stretched along both sides of Summer Avenue, east to High Street and west nearly to West Street. Jonathan Temple (d. 1789), who built this house, was a turner and a selectman in 1751, and was a deacon in the new Third Parish Church in 1770. Daniel Temple, Jr. (b. 1790) was a shoemaker. After exper- iencing a religious revival, he became a missionary in 1820 and served in Malta. farm in 1836 and remodeled it in 1856. He broke away from the church of his father to help found the Bethesda Church in He was a town selectman in 1855. His wife Sarah was.
active in the Reading Female Antis lavery Society organized in 1833, and she was an original member of Father Kemp's Folks concert singers. Kemp lived just down the street at 186 Summer Avenue (form no. C-158). Oscar Foote, who bought the place in 1863, was a meat purveyor and real estate developer.
