Turnbul1 House exhibits the three bay'center entry facade of many of Stoneham's cornice, a decorative apron in the front gable, pedimented windows and an elaborate entry porch. The house retains its original slate roof and 2/2 sash as well as its granite curbing and posts.
HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (explain the role owners played in local or state history and hor the building relates to the development of the community) The R.P. Turnbull House possesses integrity of location, design, setting, materials and workman- ship. It is significant as a fine local example of the Italianate style. It meets criterion C of the National Register of Historic Places. This residence was valued at $3,750.00 in 1874, a figure well above most local residences. The valuation is borne out in the fine details and finishes of the exterior. The central entrance has a gable roofed portico supported by chamfered posts, brackets, and truss work, and the trusses are repeated in the front gable. This is the best example of approximately six similar houses in Stoneham. R.P. Turnbull was a partner in the Tidd Tannery located nearby on Pine Street.
