Situated on a corner lot, few such complete structural settings remain. The two-story house is enlivened by a corner tower with original ornamental copper finial, small triangular dormer, and high decorative fieldstone foundation. A turned balustrade decorates the porch, which represented a new kind of indoor-outdoor link, and was almost an emblem of Victorian living.
HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community) This land was purchased by Charles D. Wells from David C. Temple via a deed dated April 12, 1893. Wells, from Richibucto, New Brunswick, and his wife, Mabel G. (Flint) Wells, built this house the next year. She was p descendant of the Thomas Flint family from North Reading, Mass. Wel1s was a blacksmith, whose shop was located facing Elm Park (now 159 Ash Street). Today, the house retains its barn intact -- an integral part of a property in the days when the horse and carriage was the principal means of transnortation.
