Constructed c. 1830-40, it retains the five-bay, center entry facade of earlier houses, rather than focusing on its gable end. Its later date is revealed in its height (resulting in a central window placement) and its twin chimneys. A one story ell extends from the east end of the rear elevation. The house rests on a granite foundation and is sheathed in clapboards with narrow cornerboards and wider frieze and water table.
.Windows have simple frames and contain 2/2 sash. The entry is framed by 3/4 length side lights and is protected by an early twentieth century, open hipped roof porch. The house faces north on William Street and is set on a hill with a granite retaining wall. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community) 342 William Street possesses integrity of location, design, setting, materials and workmanship. As an excellent example of a traditional Greek Revival cottage reflecting Stoneham's early industrial period, it meets criterion C of the National Register of Historic Places. This modest cottage was built for Micah Williams' daughter, across the street from the Williams' homestead (#75). Williams was a land holder along Williams Street in the mid and late nineteenth century.
Stylistically, it is similar to a residence at 107 William Street near the town center (#176).
