HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community) The Williams-Linscott House possesses integrity of location, design, setting, materials and workmanship and is significant as an early 18th century house which was remodeled into a fashionable Italianate style home in the mid-nineteenth century, reflecting Stoneham's general prosperity at that time. It meets criterion C of the National Register of Historic Places. The original house was built ca. 1712 by an early Stoneham settler. Until recently, remains of the Stonewall marking Charlestown's Plantation could be seen behind the house. Originally the house consisted of four rooms with a huge central chimney.
The Richardson family arrived in 1787 from Woburn and built the three houses on the property: The roof of this house was rebuilt as a hipped roof with two chimneys, and four small rooms were added to the front of the structure. Micah Williams, the owner in the mid-nineteenth-century was a prosperous farmer who remodelled the structure into a fashionable Italianate residence. An early twentieth century owner, a Mrs. Knapp, brought a Scottish gardner who set out many unusua trees. Unfortunately most of the original hundred acre site has been subdivided.
