Aldrich House is an outstanding local example of Federalist architecture, one which seems by its appearance to have been built near the end of the style's popularity. The house consists of a 2-storey main house with interior end-wall chimneys (west) and a one-storey ell with a single end-wall chimney (east).

The whole building rests on a foundation of hammered granite above which all elevations are brick, laid up in stretcher bond; bonding of the outer walls to the inner is accomplished by frequently square bricks; which bear the same outward appearance as ordinary bricks. SEE CONTINUATION SHEET HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community) Significant primarily for its well-preserved architecture and for its rural site, the J. Aldrich House has few known historical associations. The house's first known owner (1855) was J. Aldrich, a Quaker, and presumably, a brother or son of Daniel Aldrich, who owned a nearby saw mill and a brick cottage (Form #8-4) of similar design to that of the Aldrich House. Following J. Aldrich, the property was owned by E. A. Aldrich (1870)and V. F.

Moffett (1898), neither of whom are mentioned in secondary sources. The J. Aldrich House possesses integrity of location, design, setting, materials and workmanship, as well as historical associations with the locally prominent Aldrich Family and a unique method of brick construction. The Aldrich House meets criteria C of the NRHP. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE The facade (south) is symmetrical, having at its center a sunken-panel door flanked by sidelights and engaged columns which rise to an elliptical arch filled with a wooden fan. Windows all contain 6/6 sash (possibly a replacement) set in surrounds with hammered granite sills and lintels. With the exception of windows in the south elevation of the ell and a wood- frame addition to the rear of the ell, the house is essentially unaltered. OWNER: Patricia E.
