The house stands on a hammered granite foundation and is enclosed by a steep hip roof through which rise two interior chimneys. Windows consist of re- placement sash (2/2) set in brick surrounds with splayed lintels of hammered granite. The facade (south) is laid up in Flemish bond and is symmetrical about its center entry. The entry consists of a replacement door framed by panelled stiles, sidelights and a elliptical fanlight(blocked).
SEE CONTINUATION SHEET HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community) Noteworthy primarily for its Federalist design and details, the Farnum House is most prominently associated with William & Mary Farnum who owned it during the last half of the nineteenth century (1857 & 1870). Other owners have been Miss M. Farnum(1855) and Helen M. Farnum(1898). It seems likely that the house was built for a member of the same Farnum family which descended from Cornet John Farnum, a founder of Uxbridge, and Moses Farnum, a prominent local Quaker (Form #15-12). As the house stands in the vicinity of eighteenth- century land holdings of Moses Farnum, it is possible that it was built for one of his children or grandchildren.
The William & Mary Farnum House possesses integrity of location, design, setting and workmanship, as well as historical associations with the locally prominent Farnum Family. In addition, the house is an important survivor of a moderate number of high-quality Federalist style brick houses, built in Uxbridge in the early nineteenth century. The William & Mary Farnum House meets criteria C of the NRHP. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Set in front of the entry is a porch which has a half-hip roof supported by fluted pilasters against the house and replacement posts toward the street. The cornice of the house is decorated by a fret moulding. At the house's southeast corner, the earth is dug away to allow a fully above ground entry to the cellar. OWNER: Ronald A.
