Description of the property

locally made red bricks laid up in simple rows of stretchers with no apparent bonding extends out to the rear for a distance which is at least the length of the main building. This side wing has two full floors but the heights and detailing are reduced and the which is actually made of brick which is raised from the plane of the wall and painted wing features small frieze windows where the sash slide horizontally into wall cavaties. A one-story brick wing, which is apparently original, is located on the rear in the space between the two sections of the house. The interior features a broad central hallway along the south side of the main section. The hallway is entered by a large doorway featuring side and top lites. It contains a spacious open stairway leading to a similar hallway on the second floor.
To the right of the hallway is the parlor, a spacious room that features massive Greek Revival wood- front parlor is another room with similar woodwork. The lower south section contains 7. Alterations to the original fabric are minor and consist of rebricking of the fireplaces, facade;they have not been sandblasted or otherwise damaged.The building consists of two distinct parts:a large central section which isa full two stories in height, reached via a broad doorway with a hoist.The basement features a summer kitchen with . original site for present-day usage. Statement of significance

(in one paragraph) The Carlos Avery House is significant as a rare and unusually fine example of rural to a degree unmatched by any other building in the townshiy. Its broad brick entabla- ture and fully articulated triangular pediments are distinct characteristics of this defining the Greek Revival in this southern part of Lorain County. The building survives in remarkably good condition with only very minor alterations. Finally, this building is one of only a handful of brick residences built in the township during the pre-Civil War period and is the largest and most distinguished of these residences.
The house bears a similarity to two other brick Greek Revival residences which are the Werden House and the Brown House, both feature similar side wings to the Avery House and have similar datestones over the main entrance, suggesting that the same House is a full two stories in height, unlike the other two houses, and is considerably Carlos Avery purchased this 145-acre lot from the State of Connecticut for $325 in 1844. He initially built a small frame residence, which still stands in greatly altered condition, about five hundred feet north of here. Avery completed this residence in 1855 and raised a family of five children here. He remained here until his death and picnic grounds was serviced by an electric interurban line which ran through the farm, Old photographs exist of the park, but no visible traces of its existence owners who have begun a thorough restoration of the property.
