Description of the property

The Anthony House is situated on a half-acre lot amidst rolling hills east of the Hoosic River in Adams, Massachusetts. The house sits on a low rise at the northeast corner of the intersection of East Road and Walling Road, near Tophet Reed Brook. This area, named Bowens Corner for the tavern that was built on the opposite corner in 1797, was one of the earliest parts of Adams to be settled. The stage route from Northampton ran along East Road and then descended westward to the center of Adams. The house is a 2 1/2 story Federal-style building, rectangular in plan, and five bays wide with a center entry. The roof is a shallow-pitched gable, and twin interior chimneys rise from the mid-line of the house. Asmall11/2-story ell original to the house is attached to the eastern rear facade. A porch, added to the ell's south side ca. 1950, was enclosed in the 1960s.

The foundation is dry-laid fieldstone, covered with cement. The house has a full. basement. The exterior sheathing is the original narrow clapboard except for a small replaced section on the building's north side. Early twentieth-century photos show that the center entry formerly contained an eight-panel door and was topped by a three-light transom and a portico. Both the existing door and portico are modern replacements. The present 6/6 sash windows are also modern. The roof was originally covered with wooden shingles. Photographs show that it was covered with tin sheet at one time, but replaced with asphalt shingle after 1949. The ell roof is covered with metal plate. The west elevation, the building's main facade, is five bays wide.

Nine windows, with shallow pedimented architraves, are symmetrically placed around the front entry (four windows on the first floor, five on the second floor). Plain corner boards and a simple cornice frame the facade. In 1926, the Adams Society of Friends Descendants placed a plaque commemorating the birth of Susan B. Anthony to the right of the front entry. The south elevation, facing Walling Road, has two windows for each of the two main stories and a tiny attic vent window in the gable. Three windows and frames werereplaced in the 1960s with smaller double-hung sashes: Only one 6/6 sash with pedimented architrave remains. A simple cornice with returns caps the gable. The rear ell's south side, originally three bays with an entry and two windows, has been covered with a modern enclosed porch served by a single entry. The 12' X 20' ell dominates the rear facade.

Two 6/6 sash windows are located on the northern half of each of the main building's two floors, and there is a small half-sash window directly over the ell. On the northern elevation, three 6/6 windows similar to those on the west and south of the building remain. But a door that once served as the entrance to a store in the house's left front, room has been covered with clapboard. (continued) 8.

Statement of significance

/Architect Daniel Anthony Statement of Significance (in one paragraph) The Anthony House, built in 1817, possesses integrity of location, design, materials,and workmanship, as well as assoctations with a quaker family closely tfed to the arly educational and industrial development of Adams, Massachusetts. It was built by Daniel Anthony, an early contributor to Adams' 19th century industrial development and a member of the Quaker family who were among Adams' original settlers The building is a well-preserved example of rural Federal architecture. It is also the birthplace and childhood home of suffragette Susan B. Anthony (1820-1906), as well as the only building in Massachusetts associated with her life. Thus, the Anthony House meets Criteria A, B and C of the National Register of Historic Places on the local level.

Shortly before the Revolutionary War, a group of Quakers from Smithfield, Rhode Island, and nearby Dartmouth, Massachusetts, settled in the town of Adams (originally East Hoosic) seeking religious tolerance. They were accepted by the small group of Baptists who were among the first settlers of the tiny agricultural community. Known for their strict religious views, simple way of life, and emphasis on education, equality, industry, and family life, the Quakers quickly developed a tight-knit community in Adams. One of the first Quakers to arrive was David Anthony, great-grandfather of Susan B. Anthony. David settled in the western part of the town, along Hoxie Brook, where he established a cider mill in a building that had previously housed a gun shop.

(The building remains in the Anthony family and continues to operate as a cider mill.) Daniel Anthony, Susan's father, was born at Bowens Corner, east of the Hoosic River, in 1794, the first child of David's son Humphrey. Shortly before his marriage to Lucy Read in 1817, he built the nominated property at Bowens Corner on a small parcel of land offered to him by Daniel Read,Lucy'sfather and a wealthy Baptist farmer in the area. Humphrey Anthony donated lumber for the house. In 1821, Daniel Read formally sold the property to Daniel Anthony for fifty dollars. DanielAnthonywas closely associated with both education and manufacturing in Adams. It was common for Quakers to establish their own schools at home, and Daniel taught for a number of years at the East Road School, located on his father's property. In addition, Daniel helped establish the Adams Adams, rich in water resources, was an ideal location for industry. In 1822, with his brother John, Daniel build a 3 1/2-story factory, the Pump Log Mill, on a site adjoining his own property along Tophet Brook (now called Tophet Reed Brook). Powered by a 26-foot water wheel, the factory was designed to manufacture cotton yarns. Weaving was done by neighborhood families. Eleven female mill workers boarded with the Anthony family during the factory's operation, and a front room of the Anthony home served as the mill's shop. A modern two-car garage stands to the northeast of the house. The interior floor plan, typically Federal, remains basically as it was in the early 19th century. The main house has a center hall with a large room on either side and two smaller service rooms at the rear. A central staircase leads to four similar spaces above. The ell has two small rooms and a loft.

Most of the original woodwork and mantels remain intact but ceilings have been replaced and one fireplace bricked in. (Continuation Section 8) Five years after he established the Pump Log Mill Daniel Anthony was persuaded by a financial investor to leave Adams and set up a cotton mill in Battenville, New fork, where the family moved in 1827. Though she left Adams in 1821, Susan B. Anthony returned to the town often throughout her life. Susan B. Anthony's later life is well known. In 1892, she became the association's president. Susan B. Anthony did not live to see women get the right to vote, for she died in 1906, thirteen years before the 19th amendment, giving women suffrage, was passed, but she was a wholehearted champion of the cause throughout her career. The nominated property remained in the Anthony family until 1895, when it passed to the first of a series of owners. In 1926, the Society of Friends Descendants purchased the home; they operated it as a small museum from 1926 to 1949, when the building reverted to private ownership. Archaeological Consideration: The Anthony House may retain archaeological deposits relating to the domestic use of the property.
