Beginning as early as 1758 when Lieutenant Joseph Bancroft sold shoes in town, Reading citizens found employment making shoes by hand. By 1792 Daniel Chute had a large shoe producing business; Daniel Pratt began his shoe business about 1796. "By 1882 nearly every family in Reading was binding and - stretching shoes for many different shoemakers." Reading specialized in dancing pumps in the 1830's and later produced infant and childrens shoes, often with fancy hand stitching. Much of the shoemaking work was done in "ten-footers", the local nickname for the small shops that dotted the town.
After the introduction of sewing machines after the Civil War, production techniques changed from hand to machine work, and from a cottage to a factory industry. Reading lost business to towns with larger concentrations of factories, but dia retain its shoe production until into the 20th century.
