UTM: 19/320370/4699020 (Staple additional sheets here) ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE (describe important architectural features and evaluate, in terms of other buildings within community) The Arlington Coal and Lumber Building is an unusual and outstanding example of the Gothic Revival style. Its main facade displays fine Stick Style detailing, with a variety of wooden wall cladding, extended brackets, and three round-arched windows (now filled in) topped by a carved triangular panel. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community) Built ca. 1875, the Arlington Coal and Lumber Building has played many roles: at one time, it was an important civic center for the town.
Its second floor auditorium, Union Hall, was one of several such meeting facilities around town, and served many purposes. It was the site of religious services while various Protestant denominations waited for their churches to be built; dancing classes and dramatic productions were held there; the Arlington Zouaves, a quasi-military marching society, met in the hall; and in 1885, it was even used for roller skating. for commercial purposes, and the building once housed the Arlington Heights branch of the public library. It has been very well maintained. CRITERIA FOR EVALUATION The Arlington Coal and Lumber building possesses integrity of location, design, setting, ~ materials, workmanship, and association.
A well detailed example of the Gothic Revival Style, and a building thathas played manyroles during Arlington Heights' early years of development, it meets Criteria A and C of the National Register of Historic Places.
