UTM: 19/32145014698700 (Staple additional sheets here) ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE (Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the conmmity.) The Arlington Pumping Station is a well-preserved 1½-story rectangular brick Renaissance Revival -styler structure. It sits on a battered raised basement and is capped by a hipped roof. The three-bay wideenclosed porch has an arched central opening: Fenes.tration with brownstone trim is symmetrical throughout. A large brick chimney is located to the rear of the structure.
HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the commmity.) Arlington joined the Metropolitan Water System in 1898 and abandoned its own system at that time. The Metropolitan Water Board built this pumping station in 1907c well as a standpipe to supply the town with water. The station was built adjacent to a- railroad line so that coal, for the steam engines, was easily accessible. Two engines were originally installed; both had capacities of 1.5 million gallons per day. 1917, a steam turbine-driven centrifugal pump with a capacity of 3 million gallons per day was installed. All of these steam engines were eventually replaced by diesel engines, the first of which was installed in 1944 and the remaining two in 1952. It continues to serve as a pumping station for the Town of Arlington.
CRITERIA FOR EVALUATION The Arlington Pumping Station retains integrity of location, setting, design, materials, workmanship, feeling, and association. and fulfills Criteria A and C as a fine Renaissance Revival example of Arlington's municipal improvements at the turn of the century.
