acreage_less than one acre Setting The house is situated on a Landscaped lot on the western shores of Spy Pond UTM: 19/322270/4697230 (Staple additional sheets here) ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE (describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within community) Greek Revival houses appear in virtually every neighborhood in Arlington, but few are as tne as the call-Bartlett House. The gable ends of this dwelling face Pleasant Street (west) and Spy Pond (east). An inspection of its eastern facade reveals a stately two- story portico running the width of the house. There are four smaller homes on the pond side of the former Call-Bartlett estate. One of these dates to the 18th century, two are of 19th century construction, and the fourth is a relatively recent addition to the struc- tures that line Spy Pond's western edge.
None are part of the Pleasant Street property today. A possibility exists that this handsome residence was significantly altered in the third quarter of the 19th century by the introduction of a north wing and an expanded portico with chamfered posts. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community) Built in 1855, this house was first occupied by Henry Call, formerly of Charlestown, Massachusetts. The house also has important historical associations with Prof. George Bartlett, principal emeritus of the State Normal Art School. Born and educated in England, Bartlett studied at the South kensington School and became an eminent draftsman, designer, and lithographer before coming to America in 1870. He lived in this house from the 1880s until his death on March 29, 1923.
CRITERIA FOR EVALUATION The Call-Bartlett House is an especially fine example of Greek Revival architecture and holds associations with several of Arlington's prominent citizens. It retains integrity of location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling, and association, and meets Criteria B and C of the National Register of Historic Places.
