The Chapel ot St. Anne 1s Norman Gothic 1n style, with a rustic appearance. Fieldstone used in construction was dug out from the building site. The Chapel is 2½ stories in height and of a rectangular plan. Two shallow bays extend laterally from the narthex and the apse bay curves gracefully. Near the eaves of the slate-covered ridge roof are : a series of regularly spaced narrow round windows, and the west wall, at the head of the nave, incorporates a rose window.
HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the commmity.) The Chapel is Arlington's only example of the work of noted Boston architect Ralph Adams (1863-1942). A dedicated Gothic scholar, Cram produced many collegiate and ecclesiastical buildings in the Gothic Revival style, including the nave-efNew York City's Cathedral of St. John the Divine. In Arlington, Cram chose to work in the Norman Gothic style, creating a massive stone structure of near. perfect proportions. One critic has suggested that the Chapel resembles a church of the tenth or eleventh century in the Pyrenees or in Brittany. The deliberately dark interior is lit by stained glass windows, the work of noted glassworker Charles Connick, with whom Cram frequently collaborated.
Both the, interior ant exterior walls have had wooden and stone fragments integrated into them. Some date back to the 15th century. Others include a paved stone from an old Cambridge sewer and a 16th century Madonna and Child carved from Carrara marble. Examples of the works of numerous European carvers are also incorporated, including Myer of Oberammer-gau and Angelo Cualdi. The Chapel is located in a quiet residential neighborhood in the midst of winding paths and carefully landscaped lawns and gardens. Originally part of an orphanage operated by the Society of St. John the Evangelist, the Chapel now serves as the centerpiece of St. Anne's School for Girls.
