The complex roofline of the Edward Hall House, with its projecting gables, conically roofed circular tower, and richly articulated verandah, adds complexity to the simple shape of this ca. 1890 Queen Anne house. It effects a picturesque and rambling appearance despite the constraints imposed by its confining corner lot. A semi-circular driveway adds to the illusion of grander dimensions.
This dwelling owes its distinctiveness to the abundant Art Nouveau- influenced carving on the main gable end and the especially handsome Queen Anne verandah. The medium-relief carving, the work of an accomplished hand, consists of energetic swirls of vegetation that divide the gable into symmetrical halves. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (Explain the role owners played in local or state A cartouche history and how the building relates to the development of the commmity.Joccupies the apex of the gable, above the paired windows. design of arched bays that are modulated in width asthey encircle the corner tower before terminating at the north side of the house. The turned posts are weighted at midpoint with outsized spheres. The balustrade of tightly spaced- spindles is original. Also of note are the tapered chimneys and the half-timber decoration on the north and south gable ends.
The 1/1 sash windows are probably replacements; otherwise, the exterior of this dwelling is unaltered. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: This house was built in 1890 on land owned by Charles Bacon, the president of Felt Mills in Winchester, for his daughter, Mrs. Edward Hall. Mrs. Hall sold the house to Albert Walcott in 1912. Although the interior was destroyed by a fire in 1893, the elaborate Queen Anne exterior of the house remains untouched. CRITERIA FOR EVALUATION The Edward Hall House possesses integrity of location, design, setting, workmanship, feeling, materials, and association. As a well-preerved and well-detailed example of the Queen Anne style in Arlington, it meets Criterion C of the National Register of Historic Places.
