UTM: 1932226814697160 (Staple additional sheets here) ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE (Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community.) This house was moved from an undetermined location to its present site in 1850. Probably dating to the 1830s, it has gable ends facing north and south. The house is an unusual amalgam of mid and late 19th century styles.
Circa 1850 flush boards cover its main facade, while its edges are defined by corner and fascia boards, also ca. 1850. The central portion of its main facade displays treatments that indicate ca. 1870s alternations probably dating from Edward Hornblower's occupancy in the early 1870s: an, Eastlakian entrance porch supports a bay window; a low-pitched gable rises above; a low stick-style balustrade fronts the building. Porch,window, and gable features characteristic of Romantir HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the conmmity.) During the early 1870s, this was' the home of Edward Hornblower, a founder of the Boston brokerage firm of Hornblower and Weeks, later Hornblower, Weeks, and Hemphill Noyes.
From 1876 until 1912, the house was owned by George Freeman, a Boston jeweler and member of the Arlington Boat Club. Homes along Pleasant Street, overlooking Spy Pond, were popular with upper-middle-class commuters in the mid to late 19th century. The small structure at the rear was originally a bam, built in 1805 for the Squire Wittemore House. The barn was formerly situated on the site of St. John's Episcopal Church, further north on Pleasant Street. Like the Whittemore House, the barn was moved, and was placed on its present site ca. 1850. cont. AchitecturalSignificance Revival houses do not mask this structures Greek Revival elements.
