The rear of the house overlooks Spy Pond. UTM: 19/32208014697000 (Staple additional sheets here) ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE (Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the conmmity.) This mid-19th century frame vernacular residence is composed of a large main block and small rear addition. Stylistically, its form, window enframements, and the return eaves of its gable roof are Italianate in sensibility. Its main entrance, with a full transom topped by an unbroken pediment, is Greek Revival in feeling.
HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the conmmity.) Built in 1856, this house's original occupants were a Miss Prentiss and a Miss Payson. They moved to Arlington from Charlestown, MA. For many years this was the residence of Payson Prentiss, organist at the First Parish Church and the Universalist Church He was a music teacher and commodore of the original Arlington Boat Club on Spy Pond. He died on June 9, 1906. His widow, Ellen, islisted at this address in the 1920s. The western shore of Spy Pond was the center for seasonal recreation activities in the second half of the 19th century.
CRITERIA FOR EVALUATION The Prentiss-Payton House,typical of the mid-19th century suburban residences built along Pleasant Street, possesses integrity of location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling, and association. It fulfills Criterion C of the National Register of Historic Places.
