UTM: +9/322080/4697640 (Staple additional sheets here) ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE (Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the commmity.) This highly visible Arlington landmark is situated on a lot at the corner of Massachusetts Avenue and Avon Place. It is unmistakably Second Empire with its symmetrical rectangular form, patterned shingle roof with elaborate dormers, and decorative brackets beneath the eaves. Examples of the Second Empire style are rare in Arlington. Particularly noteworthy is its front porch, which possesses a Stick Style sensibility. Its saw-cut posts support a transom with cross boards.
HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the commmity.) This residence was owned for many" years by William Proctor. A teller at the Faneuil Hall Bank, which was located at 3 South Market in Boston, Proctor was one of a growing number of commuters who worked in Boston and settled in Arlington during this period._ son, also named William, was a distinguished Boston architect, and a partner at the firm of Gay and Proctor, which designed many Arlington buildings, inçluding the Russell Terrace, the Shingle Style apartment building on Park Terrace, (#572) and Locke School on Park Avenue (#569). CRITERIA FOR EVALUATION. The William Proctor House possesses integrity of location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling, and association.
For its association wíth Arlington architect William Proctor, and its distinctive and well-preserved architectural form, it meets criteria B and C of the National Register of Historic Places.
