UTM: 191323670/4697820 (Staple additional sheets here) ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE (Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the conmnity.) An unusual remnant of northeast Arlington's days as an important center for market gardening is 37-49 Park Street. This long rectangular frame structure, built ca. 1885-1890, once housed farm workers. It contains seven units.
Dèvoid of saw-cut or incised decoration, its main facade displays regimental rows of plainly framed doors, windows, and dormers. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the commmity.) As a dormitory for farm laborers, this structure may represent a building form unique to Arlington. Multi-unit housing for factory workers (usually constructed of brick) were buiit in urban industrial centers like Lowell and Lawrence. Few New.England farms, however, were large enough to require housing for their laborers. The Arlington market garden farms of the Wymans, Moores, and Rawsons were large enough to require workers' living quarters constructed near the fields and greenhouses. Market gardener Warren W.
Rawson was the first person in Arlington to apply extensive scientific techniques to his farming exterprise. Among his innovations were the use of steam-heated hothouses and electric arc lamps. In the 1890s, Rawson employed as many as 65 laborers to work the fertile fields of eastern Arlington. He built the structure at 37-49 Park Street ca. 1885-1895 to house a number of his workers. According to a.1902 directory, residents included six Irish farm workers and a steamfitter. From their rear windows, they could see Rawson's farm from Warren Street to the Mystic River. CRITERIA FOR EVALUATION The Warren Rawson House is a significant and well-preserved example of vernacular housing perhaps unique to Arlington. It possesses integrity of location, design, materials, workmanship, feeling, and association, and fulfills criteria A and C of the National Register of Historic Places.
