UTM: 19132246014698340 (Staple additional sheets here) ARCHITECTURAL SIGVIFICANCE (Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the conmmity.) The finest Greek Revival house in this section of Arlington, the E.M.C. Sterling House has a full pedimented gable, a one-story Doric porch, corner pilasters, and a side-lighted entrance. An extended ell of several sections is attached to the southeast wall of the house. The house stands atop a low rise on a broad lawn, and the property is framed by a low stone wall and gate- posts.
HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the commmity.) According to the 1875 J.B. Beers & Co. Átlas, house belonged to E.M.C. Sterling. This was probably Ella Mahalla Cutter Sterling, the daughter of J. Cyms Cutter, who in 1875 continued to own and farm most of the property surrounding this house. Mrs, Sterling. was married_to. Edwin L. Sterling. The Cutter Family was prominent in Arlington affairs beginning in the early eighteenth century, when John Cutter was chosen to be deacon of the 'newly organized Northwest Precinct/Second Parish of Cambridge. CRITERIA FOR EVALUATION The E.M.C Sterling House is an intact example of the Greek Revival style.
It retains integrity of location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, and association and it meets criterion C of the National Register of Historic Places.
