Local tradition ascribes a 1746 construction date to this building, and it is possible that some fragments of an earlier structure may survive. But archi- tectural evidence indicates that the house's primary significance is as a wel1- preserved example of the Greek Revival style, probably the grandest of the Greek Revival houses in the area. It is fully pedimented with a one-story Doric porch and wide corner pilasters.
HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the commmity.) At his death in 1901, Stephen Symmes, Jr., donated his farm to the town to be used as a hospital site. The city fathers sold the house instead--to the Fairchild family--and the hospital was erected on its present site, using the proceeds from the sale of the house. CRITERIA FOR EVALUATION 'The Stephen Symmes, Jr., House is a well-preserved example of the Greek Revival style. It is associated with the earliest benefactor of Symmes Hospital, and it retains integrity of location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, teeling, and assoclation. The house meets Criteria B and C of the National Register of Historic Places. BIBLIOGRAPHY and/or REFERENCES(name of publication, author, date and publisher) Mrs.
