Although this house has been divided into four units and re-sided with asbestos shingle, it retains most of Its early character. The building's window enframemerts, doorway and entablature details, as well as a monumental Doric portico, are all original.
HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the conmmity.) A striking temple-front home in a good state of preservation despite modern re-siding, this is the only example of Greek Revival architecture with a pedimented two-story porch in Arlington. Another unusual feature is the triangular wood fanlight in the pediment. Its closest achitectural relative in the valley was the First Parish's Third Meetinghouse, built in 1844 and later burned. The church's colonnaded facade was visible from this house's front door. CRITERIA FOR EVALUATION The Whittemore House retains integrity of location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling, and association. It fulfills criterion C of the National Register of Historic Places a an example of the temple-front Greek Revival style.
