acreageless than one acre Setting_The housesits on a low rise, and the property is framed by a cut-cel tone retaining wall. Granite illars mark steps cut into th rise. This is a good example of a five-bay Federal house. It is the only example in - this section of Northwest Arlington, which did not develop fully until the early 20th century- HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the conmmity.) Albert Winn, the builder and owner of this 19th century house, was a leading figure in town. He was president of the Arlington Savings Bank, a selectman, a representative in the State Legislature, and Town Assessor.
The Winn Farm was built on the former.site of Captain George Cooke's house. Cooke was awarded the first water mill privilege in Cambridge, together with 20 acres of land in 1637. His establishment foreshadowed the subsequent development of the area as an important industrial complex and, more immediately, attracted settlement in the northwest precinct of Cambridge, later West Cambridge,. and Arlington.
