UTM: 19/320826/4698940 (Staple additional sheets here) ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE (Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the conmnity.) The exterior of this five-bay Federal-style building remains essentially unchanged, although the store was converted to a double-house dwelling for two families before 1854. The double house, rather than the stacked two-family house, was a commón type. in 19th century Arlington.
HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the conmmity.) Built cá. 1816 by Benjamin Locke, the son of Captain Benjamin Locke of the Menotomy Minutemen, this general store was located to take advantage of new trade coming_south on the recently completed Middlesex Turnpike from Hampshire. -It stood at the junction of the turnpike with the newly relocated Massachusetts Avenue which before1811 had followed the route of the present Appleton Street to Paul Revere Road. In 1912, the building, now a two-family residence, was designated the town pesthouse during a smallpox alarm, but no cases were recorded. CRITERIA FOR EVALUATION The Lt. Benjamin Locke Store retains integrity of location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling, and association.
For its associations with the prominent Locke family, for the role the house played in 1coal development, and for its well preserved form, the Benjamin Locke Store meets Criteria A, B, and C of the National Register of Historic Places.
