Irregular in plan, the Allyn House is oriented on a diagonal in the center of a large wel1-landscaped lot. Sty listically, the house is a fine representative of the Craftsman style. It is covered with light gray stucco, which contrasts with the smooth, dark brown window enframements. The house is crowned by a hip roof, which extends to a broad unenclosed eave overhang, and a two-story bay window dominates the facade. A small porch covers the entryway. On its Oakland Avenue boundary, the lot is defined by a rubble- stone. wall.
HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the commmity.) During the 1870s, this house's lot was owned by the Arlington Land Company, the largest developer in Arlington Heights in the late 19th century. The present house was built ca. 1898. For many years, this was the residence of Philip M. Allyn; a book publisher in Boston. CRITERIA FOR EVALUATION With well-preserved craftsman-style detailing, the Allyn House possesses integrity of location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling, and association.
