Historical Commission house sits, there is a view of the December 1984 Mystic Lakes.' UTM: 19/322820/4699310 (Staple additional sheets here) ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE (Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the commmity.) This is the grandestof the remaining Italianate houses in the area. Its heavy double brackets, dentil courses, and boldly molded window surrounds are details that mark a well-executedItalianate house. A fine polygonal bay, its flat roof supported by paired brackets, extends from the building's side. The building has a high Italianate balcony and porch that may have been added or altered slightly at a later period. The single- story. porch, which wraps around the front and side of the building, is ornately decorated with brackets, dentils, paired columns, and turned spindles.
HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the commmity.) The Maria Basset House, built ca. 1850, is one of earliest houses in a section of Arlington - the northwest corner-that did not fully develop until the 1920s and 1930s, The gentle hills overlooking the Mystic Lakes were known in tbe second. half of_ the_ 19th cntury for dairy farming and this house, sited on a hill above the lakes, may have been associated with this endeavor. CRITERIA FOR EVALUATION The Maria Bassett House possesses integrity of location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling, and association. It fulfills criterion C of the National Register of Historic Places as a grand exaple of the Italiante style.
