Ihe only milestone still standing in Arlington, this stone is one of several that marked the mileage along the major routes through the town. The carved number "g' in the stone's center indicates mileage to Boston. In the 18th and early 19th centuries, Appleton Street was part of the major routes west from Boston, but in 1811, a short extension of what is today known as Massachusetts Aveneue bypasssed both Appleton St and its milestone. In 1940, changes in the roadway required that the market be moved slightly to its present position at the Appleton St/Paul Revere Road juncture.
The Arlington Historical Society was influential in the milestone's preservation during the road change. CRITERIA FOR EVALUATION Ihe iillestone retains integrity of design, material, feeling, workmanship, and association with one of the major transportation routes through Arlington, and fulfils criterion A of the National-Register of Historic Places. 9.
