The Locke Schoo1, built in 1899 and designed by the distinguished architectural firm of Gay and Proctor, is a well-preserved example of the Renaissance Revival style. The school has the.H-shaped,planand high hipped roofs typical of the monumental schoolhouse architecture of the late 19th century. The schoo1 has been recently converted to condominiums.
HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the conmmity.) An imposing structure set well on its site, this building was Arlington's fourth brick schoolhouse. It was described in' Charles Symmes Parkers History of Arlington as having "a handsome appearance through the tasteful disposal of the materials used and by the excellent proportions maintained." The land, formerly a part of the Addison Hill estate, has been the site of a schoolhouse since 1878, when the wooden Locke School was dedicated. In 1899, this wooden structure was moved further east on Park Avenue to the railroad tracks. (It was used by the railroad and the Pierce & Winn Co. until its demolition ca. 1936.) The Locke family was among the town's earliest settlers.
CRITERIA FOR EVALUATION The Locke School retains integrity of location, design, setting, materials, workman- ship, and feeling. As a fine example of late 19th century schoolhouse architecture by a well-known architectural firm, Gay and Proctor, Locke School fulfills Criterion C of the National Register of Historic Places.
