Multi-unit farm laborers housing, such as 68-74 Franklin Street, may represent a building type that is*unique to Arlington. This building is composed of a long rectangular main block with its eastern gable facing Franklin Street. Access to this structure is gained via a pair of porches projecting from its southern facade and four enclosed entrances that project from the rear of the building (northern facade). This house culminates in a steeply pitched gable with return eaves. A regimental row of chimneys. appears alongthe roof's ridge.
Thin pieces of wood define this building's corners and windows simply. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the commmity.) This house was built ca. 1895 to house laborers employed by Warren W. Rawson, one of Arlington's leading market garden farmers during the late 19th and early 20th centuries_ Al though farm workes' duplexes are scattered throughout the town, this building and 37-49 Park Street, also built by Rawson, are the only workers' dormitories still. extant in Arlington. CRITERIA FOR EVALUATION The Warren Rawson Building possesses integrity of location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling, and association.
It meets Criteria A and C of the National Register of Historic as a well-preserved example of an unusual form perhaps unique to Alington, farm laborers' housing, and reflective of a significant phase in the town's development, the heyday of market gardening.
