(Staple additional sheets here) UTM: 19/323180/4697680 ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE (Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the conmmity.) The Shattuck House remains one of the finest extant examples of a mid-19th century housing form -the double house-that was favored in Mill Brook Valley. It in.an excellent state of preservation.
Italianate details include the generous use of brackets along tonsr rastace decatas tnetuae the cornice, the deeply bracketed hood over the double front entrance, and the simple brackets on the window enframements. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relaces to the development of the commmity.) Ralph W. Shattuck was the owner ånd proprietor of Arlington's oldest continuing business, Shattuck's Hardware. The family was also involved in the hotel business, and Shattuck was active in Arlington's real estate development. The house is part of the Broadway Historic District, a local historic district established in 1981. CRITERIA FOR ELIGIBILITY The Ralph W. Shattuck House is a well-preserved example of Italianate architecture.
It retains integrity of location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling, and associationand it fulfills Criteria B and C of the National Register of Historic Places.
