acreage less than one acre Setting_This house sits on busy Mass- achusetts Avenue at the edge of Arlington's Central Business District UTM References: 19/323120/4697640 (Staple additional sheets here) ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE (Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the conmmity.) This building has a half-house floor plan unusual for Georgian-period homes. THe substantial third-floor overhang on the right side of the building is also unusual. The house is in a fine state of preservation, with good Greek Revival details, including the front and side porches.
HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the commmity.) One of Arlington's few remaining pre-Revolutionary structures, this house was owned in the 18th century by the Cutter family, who were among the first settlers in the area, and in the early 19th century by the Whittemore family. In the 19th century, it may have been used as a stagecoach stop or hotel, as its owner, Phillip Whittemore, also owned the Whittemore Hotel, which later became Arlington House. The Hotel, which has been destroyed, was built in 1826 on the site of Cooper's tavern at the intersection of Massachusetts Avenue, Broadway and Meatora Streets. But the name "The Wayside Inn" did not appear in local documents until the early 20th century, by which time the building was a private dwelling.
Whittemore family sold lived here and maintained his store in an adjacent building during the late 19th century. - CRITERIA FOR EVALUATION The Wayside Inn is a fine example of the Georgian style of architecture with fine Greek Revival additions. It possesses integrity of loaction, design, setting, material, workmanship, feeling and, with associations with 19th century Arlington, it meets Criteria A and Cof the National Register of Historic Places.
