Historical significance (include explanation of themes checked above) Rufus G. W. Candage, President of the Brookline Historical Society,. mentions in his account of the houses along Washington Street, given at the 1905 annual meeting of the Society, that this house was known as the Candler Cottage and was built by Mrs. Candler when she came to Brookline "about fifty years ago". Also, a biographical sketch of her son, John W.
Candler, mentions that the family moved to Brook- line after the death of her husband, Captain John Candler, In 1849. Mrs. Candler's two sons, John W. and William L., both became Boston merchants - William had offices at 13 Exchange Place in the 1870's, and John had a firm of the same name, John W. Candler & Co., at 225 State St. The firm did business chiefly with the East and West Indies and at the Cape of Good Hope. In 1866 Candler served as a Represent- ative to the Great and General Court and in 1880 and 1888 he was elect- ed to the U. S. House of Representatives. The rear of the house has been altered, probably as the result of a fire, but other than the fact that the roof is now asphalt a later addition, but it has fine details.
See 817 Washington Street for another Gothic Revival cottage, also 85 and 126 Cottage Street, 217 Reeeman St., and 1 and 9 Toxteth St. These are all fairly small wooden cottages - there is a large wooden Gothic Revival house, now somewhat altered, at 74 Davis Ave., and the Longwood and Cottage farm areas have handsome stone versions. 10.
