Historical significance (include explanation of themes checked above) During the first half of the 17th centúry, this property was part of the land holdings of Griffin Bowen; by the middle of the 18th century, the land had been divided between Bowen's two great- grandchildren, Joshua and Issac Child. Although written evidence can not place this house earlier than 1790, it is possible that this is the same house Issac Child bullt in 1715. Heavy summer beams, wide floor boards, batten doors, and strap hinges indicate that at naterials from an older building were used in the construction of this one.
There have been a number of changes in the structure of the Issac Child House, the most dramatic of which was completed in 1875 by Willard A. Humphrey*who, àccording to Harriet Woods, "raised and improved" the property. Humphrey literally raised the house and changed it from a two story to a three story structure. He built the present ground floor whose heavy trim is characteristic of the period. In 1923, the interior was altered; in 1953, three doors were cut and a window enlarged, and in 1956, a window and door were removed and a triple window installed. 209 Newton Street meets NR criteria C, being an unusual example of an 18th century homestead, one of less than one dozen remaining in the entire town. * Humphrey was a vegetable farmer, according to the 1881 Directory. and a member of the General Court in 1872 and 1873. 10.
