The first Timothy Corey House is an end-gabled, five-bay Federal-style house. Several bay windows have been added to the house, and a porch running the length of the house was added ca. 1920. A balustrade extends along the front of the yard. The property is one of the few vernacular Federal-style properties in Brookline. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the conmmity.).
Known as the first Deacon Timothy Corey House, 808 Washington Street was built ca. 1806, according to Nina Fletcher Little's Some Old Brookline Houses. It, like 786-788 Washington Street, the second Timothy Corey House, was first owned by Deacon Timothy Corey, with his brother Elijah, helped to found the Baptist Church in Brookline. Deacon Timothy and Elijah also inheirited the farmlands which had been acquired by their father Timothy, who had moved from Weston, MA to Brookline in the early 1760s. The Corey Farm was particularly famous for its apple orchards; in addition, it raised other produce for the Boston markets, like the farms of the Griggs, Babcock, and Bartlett families. The last Corey to live in this house, Miss Abie Corey, died in 1919 at the age of 93.
She was the last surviving representative of the immediate family which had been "one of the oldest and most prominent settlers of the town." (Society Proceedings 1920, p.9) Abie was the Daughter of Deacon Timothy. The property has been carefully preserved, first by All Saints Church, which was willed- the house by Abie Corey, and now by its most recent owners. The First Timothy Corey House meets criteria A, B, and C for listing to the National Register. It remains from the period in which Brookline was dominated by agricultural activity, was once the home- stead of one of the town's. most socially and civically active families, and is a rare vernacular example of the Federal style in Brookline.
