Historical significance (include explanation of themes checked above) #786-788 is one of two houses built by the Corey family (see also - #808) which owned much farmland in this area and for which Corey Hill was named.* The house was built by Deacon Timothy Corey, son o1 Timothy Corey who had moved from Weston to Brookline 1770's and purchased much land in this area; it replaced a much older house which had stood in this same location, according to an article in the Proceedings of the Brookline Historical Comission (1963-66, p.12). The house is-unusual for Washington Street, first because of its age and second because of its building fabric. Local lore recalls that Corey decided to build a stone house in spite of the protestations of his neighbors who believed that the world was coming to an end and that it was not worthwhile to build any houses.

Corey replied that he would prefer to face the end of the world from a stone: house. The house, because of its fieidstone exterior looks as if it belongs in Pennsylvania, rather than Massachusetts, but its massing and features indicate the influence of the Greek Revival style. *The Corey family was one of the oddestrandmost prominent families to help settle the town of Brookline. 10.
