Historical significance (include explanation of themes checked above) 157 Fernwood Road (#157 Clyde Street in 1909) is a substantial shingled and stucco home, designed by Charles Patch and constructed in 1909. Its Medieval Revival Style characteristics include the gable roof, three gable front facade, wedge-end bargeboards with finials and drops, a hooded entrance with large carved brackets and banded The house is handsomely sited on approximately 2 1/3 acres of land in a heavily wooded area at the end of an access road used almost exclusively by its residents.

In the second half of the 18th century, the land on which the house was built belonged to Moses White. White sold the land to Thomas Handasyd Perkins, a Boston merchant. Perkins gave part of his holdings to his daughter, Caroline who married William H. Gardiner. Their son, Charles, inherited the property and lived in his family's house until 1909, at which time Alfred Douglass purchased the house and land, demolished the house and built this house and the house next to it which he called "Fernwood." #157 was built for the domestic staff of the property, but in 1930, Sidney Winslow, a vice president of the United Shoe Machinery Corp., who purchased the estate in 1924, hired Putnam and Cox, and added a top floor, 5 baths, chambers, new dormers, and a 3-story extension for the stairhall.

Winslow"s son, a banker, lived here for a few years, after which time the house was rented to Casker Ranger II, a clerk, and his IC **Alfred Douglass, a retired New York merchant, bought the Gardiner estate and "beautified the land."
