Essentially a one and one half story Greek Revival style cottage, this house has undergone a number of alterations while still retaining such original elements as fts Greek Revival doorway with transom and sidelights; pilastered cornerboards; returns; and siting (gable end facing the 'street). Later!
additions include Gothic Revival (Tudor) arches and steeply pitched gable dormers and Colonial Revival pediments, dentils, and modillions. A three stall carriage house/barn is attached to the main structure. Smaller than many of the other Greek Revival houses in Brookline, this house fs older with alteratior which are in and of themselves architecturally significant. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (Explain the role owners played in local or state F.SCUUC history and how the building relates to the development of the commmity.) This house was built in 1824 bý General Simon Elliot who had come from Scotland to America at the age of 17. He lived on Federal Street in Boston and had several shops on State Street; he also owned a snuff mills grist mil, and lail factory 1n Newton. Army. Perkins(see 450 Warren Street), one of Boston's most illustrious and wealthy merchant princes.
factory8a bo warren Elliot's rank was earned in service in the Continental In 1788 his daughter Sarah, born in 1763, married Thomas Handasy They had ten children, the eldest of whom married Samuel Cabot, a member of another large mercantile family. Simon Elliot Greene, nephew of General Elliot, inherited this house from his uncle. Greene married Eliaabeth Tilden Linzee of Boston who, ,after 26 Greene's death, married John Sullivan Warren. They lived at 61 Heath Street.
Warren was held in high esteem in Boston and Brookline "for his many acts of liberality and his general benevolence of character." He eventually left a sum of money to be expended "in beautifying the streets of Brookline with shade trees."
