"Fernwood" , located at 155 Clyde Street, was built in 1909 by Alfred Douglass who had moved to Brookline from New York. It was designed by Charles Patch in a textbook example of the Jacobethan style, popular at the end of the l9th and beginning of the .20th century. Windows are rectangular and divided into rectangu- lar lights by stone mullions. Gables, which rise abóve the roof, are .of a steep- sided triangular The roof is ridged, while the chimneys are tall with separate shaft for each flue.
The round arched doorways are enclosed with larger frames, and brick is used for the walls with limestone for windows, parapets, and quoins. The interior framing of the house contains no wood; it is constructed of HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (Explain the role owners played in local or statesteel beams and history and how the building relates to the development of the conmmity.)terra cotta Alfred Douglass, a New York merchant, had retired by the time he purchased the land on which he laid out "Fernwood" according to plans by Olmsted Brothers. Due to business reversals, he was forced to sell this estate a number of years to subdivide the property. All attempts failed, consequently he sold it as one parcel to Sidney Winslow, Jr., vice president of the United Machinery Corporation. The land on which Douglass built this house belonged to Moses White during the second half of the 19th century.
White sold the property to Thomas H. Perkins, a Boston merchant, who eventually gave it to his daughter, Caroline. She married William Gardiner and their son Charles inherited the land and the house on it. On 1909 Douglass tore down the Gardiner's house and built this one and #157, also designed by Patch. In the late -1970's,. the property was subdivided and single family homes constructed on large, well landseaped lots.. The house is now owned by a religious sect. "Fernwood" meets NR criteria C, being a fine example of a Jacobethan manor house with original grounds landscaped by Olmsted Brothers.
