This house was built in the mid 1850's by Charles Heath, probably as a wedding present for his son Charles Henry, born in 1832, who married Lucy Wilson Ripley. In 1861 is was still owned by Charles Heath. Both tather and son were brokers, with an oftice in Boston. The house later passed out of the Heath family, but was bought back for Mrs. Charles Cunningham, who had been married to Sidney Heath, Charles Henry's bro- ther.
The house is an interesting amalgamam of styles and is unlike any other in Brookline. The low-pitched roof line is reminiscent of the Swiss Chalet style, as is the vertical boarding in the gable, while the clip- ped gable on the ell is a medieval touch. The floor plan is more It- alianate than Gothic but the decorative trim of the bargeboards, beit and string courses, portico and window lintels is a vernacular inter- pretation of Carpenter Gothic, while the first floor window hoods and the portico railings are classie Gothic Revival. It is a pity that the architect is unknown, as he was able to combine elements of a num- ber of styles in a manner entirely his own, giving the house a restrain- ed, yet decorative appearance. * The present owner, Mrs. Rodman, is the daughter of Reginald Cary Heath and the granddaughter of Sidney Heath. 10.
